The recently published Strategic Research Agenda encompasses those short-term and long-term priorities that European battery research needs to follow in order to strengthen the position of the EU on the global market.

As a result of the collaboration of the six Working Groups and the Task Forces on Cross-cutting topics, the European Technology Platform ‘Batteries Europe’ published its first Strategic Research Agenda in December 2020. This reference document has broad support from all relevant stakeholders across the battery value chain including European, national and regional research and innovation agencies.

The agenda identifies those research topics across the entire battery value chain that are most relevant for reaching the EU Green Deal objectives. The report covers the topics of short-term and long-term research priorities, the later building from the long-term Battery 2030+ research roadmap published earlier this year. Furthermore, it calls attention to the importance of skill development and education in order to reskill and upskill the current workforce and educate the newcomers in the sector. The aspect of sustainability and safety besides performance and durability is highly emphasized in the agenda. In addition, the report discuss the cross-cutting role of batteries in digitalization that require significantly accelerated developments across the battery sector.
