Digital Services Act: Task Force on Age Verification

On 23 January 2024, DG CNECT hosted the first meeting of the Task Force on Age Verification under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The meeting was opened by Deputy Director General Renate Nikolay. During the meeting, DG CNECT presented the mapping exercise on the existing age assurance requirements and typologies, which has been procured under the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) contract.

Member States had the opportunity to take the floor and present their own national approaches to age verification, and to discuss the overall tasks of the Task Force.

Next Steps

The taskforce will follow-up with another meeting after the DSA comes into full force on the 17 February 2024.

Background

The Commission has set up a task force on age verification with Member States for the implementation of the DSA. The objective is to foster cooperation with national authorities of Member States with expertise in the field to identify best practices and standards in age verification. This cooperation would build on existing measures at national level, including those resulting from the transposition of Directive (EU) 2018/1808 (the Audiovisual Media Services Directive), and would take into account relevant ongoing initiatives, as well as the current state of the art and market practices.
