Co-designing a digital skills taxonomy

Europe is facing an increasing shortage of digital skills. To address the skills gaps in the digital economy, we need to define and anticipate the digital skills demand in different sectors such as Big Data, Cyber Security and Internet of Things. This networking session, at the ICT 2015 conference in Lisbon, will discuss this with the purpose of designing a digital skills taxonomy.

Europe is facing an increasing shortage of digital skills, which are essential for innovation activities. Specifically in science and research, new developments at the intersection of different areas, such as informatics, statistics and applied mathematics, lead to the digitization of whole disciplines and the emergence of new occupational profiles. For instance, big data analytics, data security and Internet of things technology will disrupt all sectors as they embrace digital technology. The challenge is to combine needs in specific sectors with a horizontal approach in digital skills anticipation and development.

The objective of this session is to discuss how to assess the current and future needs for digital skills in different sectors. Based on this, we will match the needs with the available instruments at European and national level such as new curricula design, on-the-job training and funding instruments such as Erasmus+ and H2020.

There will be short presentations on a couple of cases in Big Data and Cybersecurity, who share their experience and set the frame. After the statements we will go in to a participatory format where all participants will be part of the conversation. The outcome will feed into skills development at European and national level.
