Authorities simbolically throwing soil to mark the beginning of the construction works
With this new facility the research team from Heidelberg University, led by Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Meier, will benefit from an optimal environment to continue working on the neuromorphic computing platform, which they are developing together with other research groups within the Human Brain Project.
Research on neuromorphic computing has two main goals: offering a tool for neuroscience to understand the dynamic processes of learning and development in the brain; and applying brain inspiration to generic cognitive computing to get more energy efficient, more robust and faster computers that have the ability to learn similarly to the way human brain does.
The European Institute for Neuromorphic Computing will be ready in 2019 with an area of more than 2,000 square meters. Construction cost of the new building amount to € 18 million. € 9 million are provided by the European Regional Development Fund and € 9 million by the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of Baden-Württemberg region, the University of Heidelberg and donations.
