The 33rd European Film Awards (EFAs) kicked off on Tuesday with the launch of the virtual “EFAs at Eight”. Over five nights, the European Film Academy celebrates the richness of European cinema as well as the nominees, among which there are 18 films supported by Creative Europe MEDIA – the EU programme supporting the European film and audiovisual industries. All together, the 18 titles gather no less than 30 nominations, and six of them will be competing for the Best European Film award.

Druk - Another Round by Thomas Vinterberg, Martin Eden by Pietro Marcello and Corpus Christi by Jan Komasa top the ranking with four nominations each, including main categories such as Best European Film, Director, Actor and Screenwriter. Overall, the EU has invested over €3 million through Creative Europe MEDIA to support the development, promotion and distribution of these 18 films.

Besides the awards for the main categories, the ceremony will include the announcement of the three finalists of the revamped LUX European Audience Film Award. This initiative, originally led exclusively by the European Parliament, in partnership with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas; has recently partnered with the European Film Academy and has introduced a public vote, to bring more European films to a larger European audience.

The award maintains its goal of shining a spotlight on European cinema and its role in spreading fundamental EU values. The virtual EFAs 2020 Grand Finale will take place on Saturday 12 December, livestreamed on the EFA website.
