Animation is a very important part of the wider audiovisual industry that is facing rapid change and innovation. According to 2015 figures from the Mapping the Animation Industry in Europe study, animated films account for 14.7% of total European cinema admissions. However, European animation only accounts for 20% of the total animation market in Europe.The growth of online content consumption offers enormous opportunities for digital content, and animation benefits from this as young audiences are the quickest to adapt and set new trends.
Animated stories fuel the imagination of every generation and continue to appeal over time. Why is this the case and how do we reap the benefits of a more globalised world for content?
This European Film Forum (EFF) event is an opportunity for the animation sector to finalise its input to a joint Animation Plan that is currently under development. Over the past few months, the European Commission has asked the European animation industry to provide input on a joint Animation Plan, which was announced by the European Commission in its September 2016 Communication "Promoting a fair, efficient and competitive European copyright-based economy in the Digital Single Market".
In the process leading up to this discussion, the European Commission has organised two workshops with industry representatives as well as a number of informal discussions to explore how the sector could upscale and identify the challenges it is are confronted with. Training needs, global trends in the field of animation, co-productions, promotion and other aspects impacting the marketplace were amongst the topics discussed.
This European Film Forum (EFF) event is an opportunity to gather further views on what the top priorities should be and how to move forward.
Lucia Recalde, Head of "Audiovisual Industry and Media Support programmes" unit at DG CONNECT (European Commission) will open the event, followed by a panel discussion: 'Setting the Course for a European Animation Plan'.

This is the world's first fully painted feature films. Every one of the 65,000 frames of the film is hand-painted by 115 professional oil-painters, bringing the paintings of Van Gogh to life.

These films received in total more than 1.2 million euro support from the Creative Europe MEDIA for film development, distribution outside their origin country and TV production.
The European Film Forum launched by the European Commission at the Berlinale in 2015 has provided space for a structured dialogue with Member States and stakeholders. One of the essential objectives is to help the diverse European works to find their public and reach new audiences not only within but also beyond the European Union. Through this Forum, useful discussions and exchanges of expertise have taken place this year in Berlin, Vilnius and Cannes.
