The European Commission at the 80th Venice International Film Festival

The EU will be present at the 80th edition of the Venice International Film Festival (31 August to 9 September 2023), with the participation of 13 EU-supported films under the Creative Europe MEDIA programme and two events under the theme ‘Europe in Focus’ at the Venice Production Bridge.

MEDIA-supported titles

Among the list of audiovisual works featured at Venice International Film Festival, 13 have been supported by Creative Europe MEDIA programme in their development or distribution. The winners will be announced on Saturday 9 September during the closing ceremony.

Four of them are in the official competition line-up, with chances to take home the prestigious Golden Lion:

  • The Promised Land (Bastarden), by Nikolaj Arcel (Denmark, Germany, Sweden)
  • Dogman, by Luc Besson (France)
  • Comandante, by Edoardo De Angelis (Italy)
  • Io Capitano, by Matteo Garrone (Italy, Belgium)

Four are shortlisted for the Orizzonti competition, honouring films that represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends:

  • Paradise is burning (Paradiset Brinner), by Mika Gustafson (Sweden, Italy, Denmark, Finland)
  • Heartless (Sem Coraçao), by Nara Normande, Tião (Brasil, France, Italy)
  • City of the Wind (Ser Ser Salhi), by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir (France, Madagascar, Portual, The Netherlands, Qatar)

Two projects are selected under the Venice Immersive, official competition:

  • Emperor (Empereur), by Marion Burger, Ilan Cohen (France, Germany)
  • Floating with spirits, by Juanita Onzaga (Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands)

Two others have been selected for the independent section Giornate degli Autori, formerly Venice Days, and now in its 20th edition - held in parallel to the festival.

  • Through the night (Quitter la nuit), by Delphine Girard (Belgium)
  • Photophobia, by Ivan Ostrochovský, Pavol Pekarčík (Slovakia)

Additionally, the film Anna, by Marco Amenta (Italy) will be featured at Venetian Nights, the series of evenings organised by Giornate degli Autori when the seventh art will serve as an excuse to talk about the environment, painting, comics, music and memory.

Europe in Focus: IP in a Transmedia World - Boosting Creativity and Audiences

The European Media Outlook Report, published in May 2023 by the Commission, has shown that the stakes for EU industry competing with global players are greater than ever! This panel will discuss recent global trends in exploitation of IP across film, series, publishing, video games and virtual worlds. The increasing value of retaining and exploiting IP will be explored, both for creative growth and reaching wider, younger audiences.

Fishbowl Conversation: AI Impacting Production and Creative Workflows

Through the interactive formula of the Fishbowl, industry experts and the audience will discuss some of the key questions regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the film and XR production and creative process. The event is hosted by Europe Creative Media Desk Italy MEDIA in collaboration with the Creative Europe Desks Denmark, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Portugal, Sweden and the Netherlands.
