The FIWARE Challenge brought together software developers from Finland, Turkey, Cyprus, Italy and Spain. The applicants from research departments, university spin-offs and SMEs came to ICT 2018 to participate in the challenge. The challenge was to create an app in 48 hours that would make cities better places to live in, using real-time data and FIWARE open source components. Each team had to create a concept and running prototype/MVP (Minimum Viable Product), which they then presented to a jury. In the end, four winners were chosen in the following three categories:
Smarter Together – Gamification for Citizen Engagement
The City of Vienna wanted to find a smart and innovative app based on gaming as a way to motivate residents to explore their region, and raising awareness of climate change and energy efficiency. Two teams were declared winners for their promising and innovative solutions to the challenge: Team Kios (Maria Tziakouri, Marilena Chrysanthou and Philokypros Loulianou), and Team CC (Pukka Nikander and Erol Galip Serbest).
Inform, Engage and Participate – The LCM Challenge: Gamification of data-access
The challenge was to explore and manage a huge amount of data from different sources through a dashboard enabling users to adjust parameters virtually and simulate different outcomes, in order to learn the best way to optimize performance: for example, for determining optimum energy consumption. The winning team was Team Hop Ubiquitous (Antonio Jara and Iris Cuevas).
Discover Open Data Challenge
This challenge focused on creating a virtual assistant to find, understand and present open data so that it is at the user’s fingertips. The winner implemented a platform for Austrian open data sets, helping users to make sense of and use data relevant for them, with the help of subscription features and an interactive bot. The winning team was Team Almadigit (Alessio Salzano and Antonio Galletta).
About the FIWARE ICT Challenge Vienna
The FIWARE ICT Challenge Vienna was launched by the FIWARE Foundation together with the City of Vienna, a member of Open & Agile Smart Cities (OASC), the Linz Center of Mechatronics, the Vienna Business Agency and Wien Energie.
