The findings, published in a report on retail broadband prices in the EU by Empiricia, provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the broadband market across the EU and reveal interesting trends and insights into the European broadband landscape.
Key Findings by Broadband Category
The report shows that prices for fixed broadband services in 2023 generally decreased compared to 2022, with an average of 3%. The lowest prices for fixed broadband services were found in Lithuania, Denmark, and Romania. For mobile broadband services, prices decreased by up to 14.9% compared to 2022, with Romania, Denmark, and France having the most competitive prices. Converged broadband services which combine fixed services (internet, TV and fixed telephony) and mobile broadband services also saw significant price decreases, with an average decrease of 11% compared to 2022. Romania, Poland, and Spain were among the countries with the most attractive prices for converged services. All the prices included in the report are normalised with purchasing power parity.
Background on the Study
The European Commission's report on retail broadband prices is a comprehensive study that covers 2023 prices for fixed and mobile broadband offers across the EU. The study is based on data collected from the websites of the five largest internet service providers and the two or three largest mobile network operators in each EU country during October 2023. The report uses a set of baskets to compare prices across different countries and broadband categories. The Commission's work on broadband is part of its efforts to monitor the developments of retail services in the EU.
