This event was organised in view of future Research and Innovation initiatives on city challenges with the participation of Mayors and Chief Information Officers. It was held on 2 October in Brussels.

To get European cities and citizens connected, innovative information and communication technologies can bring valuable solutions. The EU research and innovation programme supports the creation of the smart cities of the future by connecting your city with other European cities.

DG CONNECT of the European Commission plans to launch large piloting initiatives in the context of Horizon 2020. In the area of Internet of Things (IoT), IoT for Smart Cities is a strong pilot candidate. During this "Connected Smart Cities Consultation Workshop" the following questions were raised:

  1. How to best support cities through Horizon 2020 Large Scale Internet of Things Pilots on Smart Cities? Which city challenges can be responded to by large scale piloting of rapidly evolving Internet of Things technologies? How best implement multi-application multi-user pilots, across the whole value chain, to validate key IoT technologies?
  2. How to best enhance cities through Horizon 2020 Experimental Platforms on Net Futures? Experimental platforms with living labs have brought together citizens, enterprises, researchers and city government to start for example the City Service Development Kit. How to co-create the next-generation experimental platforms on Net Futures?
  3. FI-WARE: The ultimate solution for Smart Cities? In this section, participants debate to which extent FI-WARE can respond to the problems, needs and wishes from cities representatives.

The workshop was highly successful with participants sharing many practical experiences and debating on what are the pressing needs that cities should face in the future.
