The first call for proposals will fund pluralism and collaboration actions to promote journalism partnerships with a total amount of €10.5 million. The pluralism action is aimed at organisations that can set up and distribute funds to news media entities in sectors of particular relevance to democracy, while the collaboration action aims to support cross-border, collaborative proposals between news media organisations focusing on innovative business models and journalistic projects across Europe.
A further call for proposals worth €3 million aims to create a rapid response system that will systematically and comprehensively monitor violations of press and media freedom across the EU, as well as across countries participating in the Creative Europe programme and candidate countries. The overall aim is that this monitoring will generate better data and insights into the risks of media freedom and pluralism.
Additionally, €2.5 million are dedicated to innovative cross-border projects that help enhance Europeans’ media literacy skills and limit the detrimental impact of disinformation. The grants will encourage knowledge-sharing on media literacy practices, as well as scaling-up practices across national, cultural and linguistic borders.
These Creative Europe calls are part of wider EU support for the news media sector.
