Spotlight on EU-supported innovative tools and business models in the audiovisual sectors

Eleven projects will receive funding for the development and/or the spread of innovative tools and business models for the audiovisual sectors in the digital age.

In February 2022, the Commission launched a call for proposals under Creative Europe MEDIA programme worth EUR 7M to strengthen the competitiveness, scalability and sustainability of European audiovisual players, as well as to improve the visibility and availability of European works and increase audiences in the digital environment.

Applicants were encouraged to develop and/or spread innovative tools or business models focusing on the specific challenges of the audiovisual sector such as discoverability, sequencing of release windows, financing and territoriality in order to enable strong and visible offers of European works online and across borders to a wide public.

All the projects have started in 2022 and will last max 36 months.

Selected projects

Coprocity by Les Arcs Film Festival’s and FestiCiné (France)

Coprocity is an online working tool for film and TV professionals that features coproduction projects, after their presentation in coproduction markets. It serves as an updated catalogue thanks to a system of notifications warning users about the new projects’ updates.

MULTILINGTOOL by Elhuyar (Spain)

This project will develop and deploy a multilingual automatic subtitling and dubbing platform built with state-of-the-art language processing techniques based on neural models and deep learning, built on their existing technology Aditu. It will allow producers and distributors to subtitle and/or dub in Spanish, English and French, as well as co-official languages of Spain (Basque, Catalan and Galician), therefore increasing their targeted audiences.

Embrace the fans by White Rabbit Is Yours AS (Norway), k5international (Germany), Spring Legal (France), Blue Efficience (France), Dmaxion OU (Estonia)

Embrace the fans deploys a film distribution ecosystem that shifts from B2B to a B2C business model. The ecosystem allows access to films - wherever they are available on the internet - through blockchain, peer-to-peer and content recognition technology, and automated and immediate payment to rights holders. Promotion of European works on a global scale is incentivized by rewards of the token participation economy.

Forecast by BetaSeries (France)

Forecast is an AI-based platform for TV series script marketing analysis. The ongoing platform will be enhanced with features such as trends impact, book adaptations insights or forecasts per country, helping producers to identify new projects and develop customised marketing and financial strategies. A dedicated sales network will be put in place.

Indie Plaza by Spielfabrique (Germany) and Jamaste (France)

Indie Plaza will set up a pan-European platform for European independent studios to access key data. The platform should help them reach better deals with financiers and publishers, develop better arguments when pitching their project, diversify funding sources, reach educated analysis of their best distribution strategies and better protect their IP.

Meta Stories by Unifrance (France)

Through Meta Stories, Unifrance aims to experiment an innovative business, distribution and promotion model, with the goal of gathering a young and international audience around European content. It will develop an online European film festival based on cooperation between local and international distribution platforms, the creation of a virtual cinema within the world of the video game Minecraft and innovative communication via social networks.

MIAM ! by MIAM ! animation (France)

The Paris-based animation studio has developed an integrated production pipeline, maximizing the strengths of real time computer-generated imagery (CGI) in terms of productivity, creativity and sustainability. The pipe will allow to deliver a highly qualitative content, reducing its financial cost, carbon cost and time production.

Moonday by Moonday Technologies (Belgium)

Moonday is a start-up that develops an innovative digital platform dedicated to film and audiovisual professionals. This business-to-business social network with AI-powered database helps professionals find, manage and collaborate on productions.

Newen Meta Sky by Newen Studios (France)

Newen Meta Sky is a new metaverse to finance, promote and sell European auduviosual content! Accessible with only a laptop and a web connection, this virtual marketplace recreates the feeling of a real meeting between creators, authors, students, producers, partners, broadcasters, etc.

Nur - Empowering Creativity (Velum Version) by Designmatic (Germany)

This project will further develop the tool Nur, a 3D creation suite for animation, modelling, simulation and rendering in 3D for games, apps, films and series, etc. Currently available as an app, Nur will become an intuitive software for professionals from the audiovisual industry upon a subscription model.

SAGA by Noordrigths (Norway)

The project will develop SAGA, a platform for the administration of intellectual property rights and royalty rights related to audiovisual productions, and its corresponding agreements, budgets, financial waterfall, royalty reports, file storage, and project management. It will allow a more forward-thinking management of rights, a better compliance with relevant EU regulations relating to equitable remuneration to creatives and transparency for all stakeholders involved.
