South Korea: LG Uplus validates distributed reconfigurable intelligent surface technology to boost indoor coverage

South Korea, 26 December 2025 – LG Uplus has successfully completed an indoor verification of distributed reconfigurable intelligent surface technology in collaboration with Pohang University of Science and Technology, marking a step towards practical indoor coverage enhancement in the 6G era.

The trial showed that distributed, power-free reconfigurable intelligent surface elements, combined with AI-based reinforcement learning, can intelligently control radio wave propagation to reduce signal loss and extend coverage in non-line-of-sight indoor environments. By embedding the reconfigurable intelligent surface into everyday indoor objects such as frames or signage, the approach overcomes installation constraints associated with conventional deployments.

LG Uplus stated that the technology is applicable not only to future upper mid-band sixth generation frequencies, but also to existing 5G and wi-fi networks, with the potential to significantly improve indoor service quality.
