European Commission

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s EuroDIG has been moved from the Abdus Salam ICTP in Trieste, Italy, to take place as a fully online event.

The Commission strongly supports Internet Governance Forum National and Regional Initiatives as a key instrument to convey messages of local internet governance communities to the global arena, and to ensure awareness raising and capacity building at the local level.

In this context, the Commission is closely involved in the organisation of EuroDIG. This year we have co-organised the plenary session on digital sovereignty and we will intervene as key participants in a number of sessions and workshops, including the plenaries on the opportunities and obstacles of 5G and greening internet governance.

Digital sovereignty – from users’ empowerment to technological leadership

Taking place on 11 June at 17:00, the session on digital sovereignty, “from users’ empowerment to technological leadership”, will be held as a panel discussion with key participants from academia, the private sector, public institution and the technical community, who will put forward different perspectives starting with key questions on the matter.

Prior to this plenary session, at 16:30 on 11 June, Roberto Viola, Director-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, is set to deliver a keynote speech.

While this year’s theme is “Towards a sustainable governance of the internet”, the current circumstances have caused most EuroDIG sessions to adapt their content so as to include elements on the COVID-19 crisis.

Registration before 9 June 2020 is mandatory in order to receive credentials for access to the online platform.
