This call for proposals targets projects focused on increasing independent reporting on European issues through audio formats and expanding its dissemination via broadcasting and/or digital platforms.

  • Grants will support the production of innovative audio formats and their distribution across borders.
  • The available budget is EUR 4.5 million and the co-financing is limited to a maximum of 95% of the total eligible costs.
  • Applications can be submitted by single applicants or a consortium.
  • Editorial independence will be guaranteed by a charter of independence that will be part of the agreement between the European Commission and the beneficiary.
  • The Commission expects to fund one project, to start in January or February 2025 for a duration of 24 months.

Proposals should mainly focus on the production of audio formats, including magazines, reports, documentaries and/or talks shows. The chosen topics should provide an in-depth and diverse view on EU affairs and topics affecting multiple Member States, free from any exclusively national point of view. Proposals must aim to reflect the diversity of people and audiences in the EU and involve diverse countries/regions. Applicants are encouraged to identify market gaps and to involve media organisations that can provide independent information in areas where provision of EU affairs is scarce. Expected results include regular high-quality productions in at least 6 EU languages, with at least 10 minutes of original content per language per week.

The distribution of the audio content could be achieved for instance through a network of radio stations and/or other audio-producing newsrooms across Europe. It should aim for the largest possible audience, expected results include at least 1 million unique listeners per month.

Background information

This call for proposals is part of the Multimedia Actions, which funds general EU information, news and programmes for the public from European perspectives. Their aim is to increase the visibility of the EU institutions’ work, the decisions they make, and the steps involved in building the EU. The goal is to make citizens aware of how the decisions made at EU level affect them.

The Commission publishes annual financing decisions, constituting the annual work programme for the implementation of Multimedia Actions. The 2024 Financing Decision includes a call covering EU audio reporting.
