Creative Europe MEDIA goes digital

Since 1991, the EU has been investing in Europe's audiovisual industry through the Creative Europe MEDIA programme.

Each year, MEDIA supports around 2000 projects (including films, TV series, video games, training programmes, cinemas and much more) and attends film festivals and markets across Europe to meet audiovisual professionals and discuss the trends, challenges and needs of the industry.

MEDIA - Engaging with audiovisual stakeholders during and after COVID-19

The current COVID-19 crisis has heavily disrupted the audiovisual industry, not just in terms of cinema closures but also across the value chain. B2B events, festivals, markets and trainings had to be cancelled or postponed. However, in most cases, organisers have been quick to shift some of their activities online.

This triggered a reflection on how Creative Europe MEDIA could best continue engaging with audiovisual stakeholders on a short and medium term basis, especially at a moment when they most need our support to cope with the new challenges.

In order to adapt to the new times and to maintain a space for discussion and sharing of best practices with the industry, MEDIA will also go digital and will be virtually present at the main festivals and marketplaces such as Annecy, Cannes, Venice and San Sebastian.

In cooperation with several partners, we have developed a digital-only engagement strategy with the AV industry from now until the end of the year that will include a mix of content and formats.

Please find below the list of festivals in which we will be involved and the activities that we will organise.

MEDIA at Annecy 2020

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival and its Market (Mifa) are taking place online from 15 to 30 June. As a partner of the festival and to support the animation industry, MEDIA will join this digital edition and will be present in virtual format. If you are attending the festival, you can already visit our virtual stand!

In addition, MEDIA will organise a virtual European Film Forum, taking place on 18 June under the title  "The audiovisual sector in a post-pandemic world: focus on animation".

MEDIA at Cannes 2020

The Cannes Film Festival has been cancelled but the Film Market (MIF - Marché International du Film) has been moved online and will take place from 22 to 26 of June. MEDIA has a virtual pavilion where stakeholders and professionals can check out our work and activities happening during the festival.

The MEDIA highlights of that week will be:

MEDIA at Venice 2020

The Venice Film Festival is – at least for the time being – confirmed for 2-12 September 2020. That said, MEDIA will only be present virtually.

More information about our activities there will be available on this page closer to the date.

MEDIA at San Sebastián 2020

The festival is still deciding on the format. More information will be available soon.
