Through the annual European Broadband Awards, the European Commission highlights good practices in European broadband projects that show innovative ways of achieving the Digital Decade objectives. The aim of the Awards is to identify, give recognition to, and share good practices in planning, management and implementation of high-capacity networks in Europe.

This brochure presents the 14 projects that excelled in the 2023 European Broadband Awards. They demonstrate good practices that can serve as valuable models for other projects to learn from and replicate across Europe. Assessed by a jury of experts and awarded by the European Commission during a ceremony in Brussels, on 21 November 2023, these good practices fall under five award categories:

Category 1: Innovative models of financing, business and investment

Winner:

SIRO Network Expansion - Ireland

Finalists:

Development of Next Generation Access Infrastructure - Lithuania

Lower Austria - innovative PPP financing for supply rural areas with sustainable FTTH - Austria

Category 2: Cost-reduction measures and co-investment

Winner:

The Race Against Fagradalsfjall: Effective laying of fibre during an active volcanic eruption - Iceland

Finalists:

Strategic Connection Points Programme - Ireland

Hermes: Merger of Energie AG Telekom and Fibre Service OÖ Infrastructures - Austria

Category 3: Socio-economic impact in rural and remote areas

Winner:

Trysil: broadband for everyone - Norway

Finalists:

Ro-NET: Building a national broadband infrastructure in disadvantaged areas using Structural Funds - Romania

UNICO – Demanda Rural - Spain

Category 4: Demand generation and take-up of connectivity

Winner:

Broadband4Everyone: Broadband Infrastructure Development Plan for a sustainable City of Solin - Croatia

Finalists:

Territorial community TV for Pohjois-Satakunta area - Finland

internet.gov.pl - Information System on Fixed Internet Access - Poland

Category 5: Cross-border and international connectivity

Winner:

Rheintal Internet Exchange: Project "Around the Lake Constance" - Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland

Finalist:

Introduction of Fixed Wireless Access services by Geuzenet - Germany

The European Commission would like to thank all projects for contributing to bringing connectivity to citizens in the EU and for applying to the 2023 European Broadband Awards. Congratulations to all selected finalists and awarded winners!
