Innovation in the Sharing Economy

The sharing economy is proving a major game-changer in a number of different markets, shaking traditional assumptions and disrupting well-established value chains. This event will bring together innovators, business angels, business developers, major industries, venture capitalists and technologists who are anticipating the market disruption that will follow the rise of the sharing economy approach.

The rise of the sharing economy represents a tipping point in the evolution of capitalism, moving from the notion of ownership and control to a `liquid’ landscape, where smart platforms connect individuals (or businesses) who need a particular product or service with other individuals (or businesses) who have or can render that particular product or service. Technology plays a pivotal role in this context, effectively enabling the connection of spare capacity and demand.

The sharing or collaborative economy has already created 24 unicorns, which have received more than $26 billion in funding. Yet, the EU currently represents only 4% of the total market capitalisation of the largest online platforms and lags behind in terms of start-up platforms, despite its leading role in many enabling scientific and technology fields.

The event is organised by the SmartSociety Consortium supported under the Future & Emerging Technologies Programme and hosted by EIT Digital. It will be a première opportunity to meet and network with some of the key players in the area, establishing partnerships and creating value.

The agenda includes keynote speeches from company executives, panels with selected experts in high-impact vertical markets (transportation, healthcare, labour) and startup pitches.
