The National Congress of Electronic Records and Archives (cnADe) is one of the premier events in Spain for discussing the application of electronic records and archives for the modernisation and digitisation of the public service. The 2025 event, held on 21 and 22 January in Madrid, gathered over 700 experts from across the Spanish public administrations and service providers.
During the Congress the eArchiving Initiative hosted a roundtable called “The eArchiving Initiative: Digital preservation and Interoperability of Archives in the EU”. The roundtable included Fulgencio Sanmartín of DG CNECT (online) together with Sven Schlarb, Miguel Umlauff, Anna Sancho and Carlota Bustelo of the eArchiving Initiative.
Fulgencio Sanmartín, Policy Officer at DG CNECT, outlined the history of the eArchiving Initiative and the need for the European Commission to develop specifications and components that allow public sector organisations reduce dependency on single providers.
Sven Schlarb, technical lead of the eArchiving Initiative, explained the different specifications and components of the eArchiving Initiative, and the procedure for obtaining the eArchiving conformance seal.
Anna Sancho and Miguel Umlauff, held an open dialogue with the audience regarding the differences they have observed between different projects in Spain. Anna Sancho emphasised how the Spanish public administration had been a pioneer of digital preservation and interoperability. She noted that these pioneering implementors of the OAIS model would be well placed to reference the eArchiving specifications and tools in future projects. Miguel Umlauff emphasised the importance of collaboration with solution providers to develop Digital Preservation solutions, which is a key goal of the eArchiving Initiative.
The session concluded with a debate with the audience.
