EU Code Week 2022 will build on the success of previous years. In 2021, 4 million people in more than 80 countries around the world took part in the initiative. In 2021, the average age of a Code Week participant was 11 and nearly half (49%) of participants were women or girls. The number of Code Week activities has increased every year, from 300 in 2013 up to 78,000 in 2021 and the target for 2022 is 100,000. Of the 78,000 events in 2021, 88% of EU Code Week events last year took place in schools, demonstrating how well coding can be brought to the classroom.
Roberto Viola, Director General of Communications Networks, Content and Technology at the European Commission said: “A 10 year anniversary is a moment to reflect on progress, and over the years we have seen EU Code Week go from strength to strength. The number of participants continues to increase significantly every year, and the fact that the majority of events are now being held in schools shows that our efforts to empower teachers to bring coding into the classroom are really paying off.”
Code Week 10th anniversary activities
A wide variety of activities is being organised during this year’s edition. They range from activities such as CodyTrip, a massive online school trip to Procida, Baia and Naples in Italy, the award of the new EU Code Week School label in the Netherlands among other countries, a conference on the development of competences related to algorithmic thinking in Hungary, hackathons in the classrooms in Ireland to a free interactive fair for young and old at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, Germany, Code Week school for educators and free online sessions in programming in Malta, and an event in Romania encouraging high school students to explore self-expression by using technology in art projects. Code Week also has unplugged coding activities, which can be practiced without electronic devices, thereby lowering access barriers and bringing coding to every school, regardless of their funding levels and available equipment.
Anyone can be an activity organiser and take advantage of multiple resources to help them bring coding and programming into their teaching practices. These materials are available in 29 languages and are provided free of charge.
Furthermore, an EU Code Week Bootcamp which is an open online course is being organised between 10 October and 16 November 2022. Targeting teachers from pre-primary to secondary level in Europe and beyond, this Bootcamp is an opportunity for teachers of all subjects to develop the skills they need to take their first steps as digital creators.
For those interested in a challenge, EU Code Week will not disappoint! The Code Week 4 All challenge encourages participants to link their activities with other events organised by friends, colleagues or acquaintances. Participants who link activities from 10 different organisers or from three different countries will earn the Code Week Certificate of Excellence.
